Tremendous thanks to Senator Torlakson and his fantastic staff for their interest and review of the matter involving the past mismanagement in the City of Concord’s Housing Department.

The shocking corruption and longstanding conflicts of interest involving certain individuals in that department resulted in severe, negative consequences for Concord seniors and many others on limited incomes.

It is now understood that the U.S. Department of Housing (HUD) became involved, hopefully reprimanding City of Concord officials and management for their neglect, inefficiency and incompetence in dealing fairly and promptly with the matter.

Apparently, an amount of HUD funds had been allocated to the once respected and properly run City of Concord Housing Rehabilitation programs. Unfortunately, the programs then fell into corruption and disgrace with large housing rehab contracts being unfairly and improperly awarded to the tune of at least $1.7 million.

Thankfully, the Housing Department was disbanded and management of the programs was consequently turned over to the County.

We are now hearing that the HUD funds (as part of the CDBG process) were only one source of funding involved in the scandal. It is believed that additional funds were allocated to the programs via the State of California (RDA). Very hopefully, Senator Torlakson’s office and others are looking into that as well.

Now, there needs to be a complete disclosure by the City of Concord, with provisions put in place to provide recourse for the seniors and other victims of this terrible mess.

Got something to say?
