This blog’s editor recently posted this letter to the editor in the 3/14 Contra Costa Times about the rights of CBOs and FBOs to freedom of religious staffing that is guaranteed by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Staffing freedom

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically guarantees religious organizations the right to hire staff members based on their commitment to an organization’s principles.

Furthermore, Congress and President Clinton demanded this freedom when they adopted “charitable choice” language in welfare, community services and drug-treatment programs.

Yet Rep. George Miller maliciously mislabeled this religious staffing freedom as “job discrimination” in his floor speech of Feb. 4, 2004.

It is pointless to say citizens have the religious freedom to start a drug-counseling center, but are not free to hire staff members who share its faith and mission. Just as Miller uses federal dollars to hire staff who share his liberal beliefs and in so doing “discriminates” against those who hold opposing viewpoints, people of any faith or no faith should be equally free to associate, organize and hire those who share their convictions.

Religious freedom for faith-based groups is crucial. It is fundamental. It is constitutional. Miller, and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer should check their partisan bigotry at the gate to the public square and defend religious liberty by voting to support “charitable choice” and the freedom of religious staffing.
