Julian Zaragoza suffered burns to 70 percent of his body when a Christmas tree fire destroyed his family’s home in North Richmond on December 21, 2007. After months of painful medical procedures, Julian continues to heal from the experience that nearly killed him. Francisco, Julian’s twin brother, died from injuries sustained in the house fire. Julian’s mother, Guillermina Zaragoza, her 1-month-old granddaughter and 11 year-old son were able to escape the fire. The twins were pulled from their burning home by two brave neighbors.
Donaldo, Julian’s father, and his mother Guillermina will sleep short hours from now on as they are drilled for weeks by hospital staff about how to clean and care for Julian’s wounds, how to position his many splints at bedtime, and how to clear the plastic air valve jutting from his throat. There will soon be school to worry about, there will be medical bills, and the grueling twice-weekly commute to San Jose for physical therapy.
Without any clear idea of what the future holds, parents Donaldo Argueta Rodriguez and Guillermina Zaragoza can only focus on daily life. Julian still needs additional reconstructive surgery on his face and head. He will need to wear special garments and he will need additional reconstructive surgery as he grows. Julian will thrive with care from his doctors, but he faces a lifetime of difficult surgeries as doctors must periodically open his many scars to help him grow. These procedures are long and painful and he will need the support of both his parents.
Donaldo and Guillermina have been struggling to pay their bills and lost most of their belongings in the house fire. Donaldo struggles to balance looking for construction work with finding the time to spend with Julian. Financial support will allow the family to give Julian their time and attention during his long painful procedures. Your support in raising funds for Julian and his family will have a lifetime effect on his physical and emotional growth.
