Erik Nunn dies in Nevada plane crash
June 29, 2008
Several independent sources say Erik Nunn died in a plane crash Saturday afternoon in Nevada. He was a candidate for a runoff election against incumbent Federal Glover for the Contra Costa Supervisor seat for District 5. Sources say Erik and his wife were en route to Las Vegas to meet with Las Vegas. Nunn earned his pilot’s license in 2006.
This sad event throws into doubt the status of the runoff election; whether Nunn would remain on the ballot or not. One source indicated that Section 8807 of California’s Election Code indicates that if a vacancy occurs for a non-partisan race, regardless of when the vacancy occurs, the next highest vote recipient’s name, in this case Gary Agopian, would appear on the ballot. Updates on this tragedy and ballot outcome will be forthcoming.
The California State Election Code

8807. If the vacancy occurs among candidates chosen at the direct primary to go on the ballot for the succeeding general election for a nonpartisan office, the name of that candidate receiving at the primary election the next highest number of votes shall go upon the ballot to fill the vacancy.

Got something to say?

Not only did Erik Nunn die, his wife and other people on board died.
I don’t think the time was appropriate for a discussion about Section 8807 of the California’s Election Code! Two Families have been devastated by their loss and numerous amounts of Family & Friends are grieving!
~ EDITOR REPLIES — Yes as mentioned in post, it is a tragedy and more info will be forthcoming. Be sure to let us all know when you feel it’s OK to discuss further.

Rest in Peace.
As a Contra Costa Voter who is still voting for Erik, I want to know what happens next. Erik was a politician and this is a political blog. No need to apologize editor! You are doing your job.
This tragedy reminds us that life is borrowed and at this time we should do what is right to help Erik’s kids by providing whatever we can.
Erik came to my house in Bay Point and talked to me about what he wanted to do in Costra Costa, I was impressed just by the fact that he took the time to walk our neighborhood and talk to residents. My wife and I mourn the loss of Erik. Let’s do what we can for the kids left behind. He has prematurely preceded us to heaven. God Bless.
~ EDITOR REPLIES — I agree. Erik’s untimely death is a loss to his family, friends, church, and community. We mourn yet celebrate his life and leadership. Phil 1:21
That said, “what’s next” will be skirmish over interpretation of California State Election Code, Section 8807 cited in article.
Sorry to hear of the loss of Erik and his wife as well as the couple with whom they were flying back to California.
Erik Nunn held a very promising political future and had placed well in the recent primary election against the very popular incumbent Supervisor Federal Glover for 5th District.
Our condolences to their loved ones and friends.

So as I’m sure you all heard already.. Erik’s name will be taken off the ballot and Gary Agopian’s name will be added. I am a close friend of Erik’s and I will NOT be voting for Gary. Erik respected Glover as a political figure and if it has to come down to pick the lesser of two evils.. I’ll pick Glover. Any voter or supporter of Erik who was planning on voting for him… please vote for Glover and not Agopian..
Thanks.
