Buchanan leads Wilson… in special interest money
October 29, 2008
Why the long face on Alaska Senator Ted Stevens when his legacy lives on in Contra Costa County politics? Matier and Ross ran a story today on the golden hills of Diablo Valley. At least the gold of Independent Expenditures for political candidates. Those helping Democrat Buchanan (and bashing Republican Wilson) include teachers, nurses, police unions and professional engineers —hoping Democrats invoke eminent domain so they can design and build transit villages—for a total of almost $1 million. Wilson has received $319,000 from the California Chamber of Commerce and other business interests.
Residents protest new Concord RV-Camper-Trailer regulations
October 28, 2008
The Concord City Council has passed a new set of City Code regulations relating to the parking of vehicles and trailers in our drive ways. While I am opposed to these new regulations for numerous reasons, the purpose of this post is to see if we can at least buy some time for those of you who are most discomforted by the new set back regulations. Those affected can send City Council a message by parking their vehicles sideways in their driveways instead of facing in. Read more

October 28, 2008
Official write-in candidate for Mayor of Antioch, Allen Payton, proposed a moratorium Tuesday, on additional Section 8 housing units in Antioch and other changes to the housing program, until the city can get violent crime under control. “With increasing violent crime in Antioch - the highest of any big city in the state, we need to get that under control before we allow any more Section 8 units into town,” Payton said. “I believe it can be proven that there’s a direct correlation between crime and Section 8 housing.” Read more

Vote No on Auntie Alegria…Again
October 28, 2008
Maria Alegria is at it again in Pinole, sending flyers with baseless accusations about supposed misdeeds done by the folks who cast her out of office last February, in an historic recall election which threatens to derail her crumbling political career. Alegria is the third candidate in a two-seat race against incumbents Pete Murray and Roy Swearingen. Even the Contra Costa Times, which opposed the recall, endorsed Murray and Swearingen - calling Alegria “an unwelcome aunt at a family dinner.” Read more
Mayoral candidate says Antioch near bankruptcy
October 27, 2008
Allen Payton, write-in candidate for Mayor of the City of Antioch, says Finance Director, Dawn Merchant, is not showing the full picture when she says city finances are in the clear. Payton insists that. “Antioch’s current budget, which shows a $4.7 million reserve at the end of two years, doesn’t take into account a variety of things: Read more
California Republicans are as pathetic as Raider fans
October 26, 2008
Football and politics have a lot in common in California. Every time I think about the Republicans in the state legislature they remind me of a bad football team. If a sports team had two winning seasons in thirty eight years would you continue to support them? Yet, that is exactly how many times the Republicans in the Sacramento have been in charge of the legislature in the last thirty eight years. Read more
Auntie Alegria ignores Pinole campaign finance laws
October 24, 2008
Not one to take a hint, Maria Alegria, who was recalled last February for incompetence, is running again for Pinole City Council. The Contra Costa Times, which opposed the recall, described Alegria as “an unwelcome aunt at a family dinner” when it endorsed incumbents Murray and Swearingen.
In just the first 18 days of October her campaign has exceeded the spending totals of all of the other candidates and PACs combined; $14,479.90 to $13,883.85. Plus, in less than 3 weeks, Alegria exceeded the voluntary spending limit everyone but her signed. Worse, Alegria may be in violation of the Pinole’s new campaign finance ordinance for contributions. Documents show Alegria gave herself a contribution that exceeded the $500 maximum per person that’s mandated in the new ordinance. Alegria has funded her campaign to the tune of $5,600. And, her campaign committee gave her more than the limit of $1,000 per committee. Dial tone buzz, number calling…Hello? FPPC?
Endorsements bolster campaigns — maybe
October 24, 2008
One supposes that campaign endorsements from muckymucks higher up the political food chain can help build credibility for one’s campaign. I’m not so sure, especially when it’s the same folks that created the existing mess. Sounds like a promise of more of the same, if you ask me. But I see that Lisa Vorderbrueggen and I had the same idea as she picked up the news from Joan Buchanan, Democrat Assembly 15 candidate, when her campaign announced she was endorsed by Stockton Mayor, Ed Chavez, a Republican. As Paul Harvey, Jr., is wont to hoot, “Now that’s News!” Now I get these same e-mails and was waiting for a journalistic epiphany of “man bites dog” newsworthiness. But, alas, I guess Ed Chavez was it. How disappointing. That said, here is a roundup of other campaign endorsement announcements from various campaigns around the County: Read more
