There are 20 firearms-related bills in the California legislative pipeline. As usual, most are bad; further infringing your right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. A handful of the bills are good ones and deserving of support. Possibly the most important is AB 871, that would require that “personal protection or self defense” be adequate “good cause” for the issuance of a permit to carry a concealed firearm (CCW).
Although CCWs are routinely issued for these reasons in rural California counties, they are routinely denied in urban and suburban counties for the same reasons.
Criminals don’t bother with CCWs. They know that where CCWs are not issued, they can confront their prey with confidence and impunity. Their victims are unlikely to be armed with the means to defend themselves and fight back.
AB 871 will be heard by the Assembly Committee on Public Safety next Tuesday, April 2nd (just after April Fools’ Day). Please contact the committee members; also your state Senator and Assembly Member.
Let them know that we deserve the right and demand the ability to protect ourselves, our families, and those around us. A personal visit to their Sacramento or local office is best. Letters, phone calls, and FAXs also are effective. The NRA California Members’ Council One-Click system offers an easy way to send EMails to the appropriate legislators.
Please act as though your life depends on it. Someday, it may.
